END THE
ENDLESS
WAR
The conflict in Eastern DRC has resulted in
Countless Human
Rights Abuses,
The displacement of millions,
The displace-
ment of millions,
and a humanitarian crisis
of unprecedented scale.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has endured one of the deadliest conflicts since World War II, with over 6 million lives lost and millions more displaced. Often driven by the struggle over its vast mineral wealth, the ongoing conflict has caused untold suffering, particularly for women and children. Sexual violence has been a weapon of war, with mass atrocities committed by rebel groups and foreign-backed militia.
Since the influx of refugees following the 1994 Rwandan genocide, eastern Congo has been caught in cycles of violence. While the First and Second Congo Wars formally ended in 1997 and 2003, armed groups continue to destabilize the region. This culminated in the capture of major cities in eastern DRC by M23, a Rwanda-backed armed group, in early 2025. The group continues to illegally occupy the eastern territories of DRC until today. Ongoing efforts to reach a lasting peace and to restore territorial integrity have yet to succeed, leaving Congolese communities stateless and subject to increasingly dire humanitarian conditions.

The ongoing violence has claimed an estimated 5.5 million lives, making it one of the deadliest conflicts since World War II. Decades of conflict, including the recent resurgence of the M23 armed group, have displaced over 7 million people within the DRC, creating a massive humanitarian crisis. Families are torn apart, and children are especially vulnerable.

Conflict minerals (tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold) used in our everyday electronics like phones, batteries, and laptops, are extracted in the DRC, funding armed groups responsible for severe violence and human rights abuses. Data shows that cases of sexual violence in DRC are often concentrated in and around mining areas.

Since 1996, the conflict in the DRC has fueled an epidemic of sexual violence. Last year alone, OCHA reported over 220,000 cases of sexual and gender-based violence, highlighting the horrific scale of this crisis. Women and girls are particularly targeted, suffering immense physical and psychological trauma.

Tell the
world
After thirty years of war, the conflict in DRC risks fading into the background. We cannot let this happen. This war need not last a minute longer. With global visibility we can create the pressure needed to end this endless war.
Engage your government
With political will, any conflict can end. The people of eastern Congo have been stripped of their freedom – but their power can be restored. We all must take a stand and demand action from those in power to uphold international law.
Host a Fundraiser
Survivors and their communities continue to face precarious circumstances in eastern DRC. Without repair and healing, the damage from this war could persist for generations to come. With your support, we can ensure that every survivor at Panzi receives the care they need to recover.
