Staff Highlight: Dr. Becas Nfundiko

This month, we are featuring Dr. Becas Nfundiko, Panzi Hospital’s Medical Director of Staff. Dr. Nfundiko, who now supervises all of hospital’s medical staff, has been with Panzi Hospital since it’s opening in 1999. We are very excited to be able to interview Dr. Nfundiko to ask him about his work, his inspirations, and what he wants people to know about Panzi.

What is your title?

I am the head doctor of the medical staff. In other words, I am responsible for all the doctors. I participate in their undertakings, daily management, promotion, etc.

What is your specialty?

I have been a physician for 21 years and have specialized in Orthopedic surgery for the last 12 years.

How long have you been working at Panzi?

Since the beginning of the hospital, that is, on September 1, 1999. At the beginning, it was just three of us doctors: Dr. Denis Mukwege, Dr. Veikko Reinkeinner, and myself.

What do you like best about Panzi?

Panzi made me what I am today. Professionally, Panzi shaped me as an orthopedic surgeon, and spiritually, the morning prayer we do gives me the strength and courage to go forward.

What inspires you?

It is the honesty and perseverance of our leading doctor, Dr. Denis Mukwege. He is a model to those who want to succeed in honesty, righteousness.

What do you like to do to relax?

I don’t have enough free time, but when I possible, I like to follow documentaries about animals. I also go to the sauna and jog.

What do you want people to know about Panzi?

Panzi does not only take care of survivors of sexual violence, but is a hospital for all pathologies. Panzi is a training center for medical students, doctors in specializations, and nursing students.

What would you like to tell donors and supporters of Panzi?

I’d like to give a big thank you for all the support and faith. Without it, we would not be able to make it. May God bless you.
