WHO WE ARE
Healing survivors & communities, Whenever & however they need.
The Panzi community of supporters, health and wellness practitioners, lawyers, and activists work to help survivors become whole—and put an end to the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war.
Our Hospital
Twenty years ago, we opened our doors to the first woman who had been sexually assaulted by soldiers of opposing forces. Little did we know how continually needed our expertise would be—and how much we’ve grown.
Today, we’ve treated more than 85,000 women suffering from rape- or birth-related complications, with thousands regaining their whole selves through our innovative, holistic healing model.
We also serve as a general hospital for nearly 500,000 underserved people, from treating broken bones to cancer.

Doctor. Founder. Global advocate.
Dr. Denis Mukwege is a world-renowned gynecological surgeon, and founder of Panzi Hospital and Foundation.
His experience treating women led him to his life’s mission: to increase protection for survivors of sexual violence—and bring the perpetrators, and those who sanction it, to justice.
Dr. Mukwege is also on the advisory committee for the International Campaign to Stop Rape and Gender Violence in Conflict. He’s received numerous awards, including the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize.
“It’s not just perpetrators of violence who are responsible for their crimes, it is also those who choose to look the other way.”
—Dr. Mukwege
