Transformative Programming
Badilika: Advocacy and Justice Work

“Badilika” in Swahili means “change” or “to transform.” The name reflects the program’s mission to drive systemic change and transformation in societal attitudes and behaviors, particularly around gender equality and the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence.

The Badilika Program, implemented by Panzi Foundation, is a transformative initiative designed to address the underlying causes of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). While many of Panzi’s programs focus on providing direct care to survivors, Badilika aims to create long-term, systemic change by challenging the societal norms, power imbalances, and gender inequities that enable SGBV to persist.

Key Objectives of the Badilika Program

Badilika’s primary mission is to promote gender equality and women’s rights by reshaping attitudes and behaviors within communities. The program focuses on fostering cultural and institutional changes that protect women and girls from violence and discrimination, ultimately working toward a future where SGBV is no longer tolerated.

Target Audiences

Badilika collaborates with local civil society organizations to reach a wide range of groups, ensuring its message of equality and respect resonates at every level of society:
Badilika Panzi Education

Youth

Badilika engages with students in secondary schools and universities, educating them about gender equality, healthy relationships, and how to prevent SGBV.

Badilika Panzi Advocacy

Community Leaders

The program works closely with local leaders, including those in the military, police, judiciary, and civil society, to build their capacity to champion women’s rights and address SGBV within their spheres of influence.

Badilika Panzi Women Empowerment

General Public

Through mass awareness campaigns, including radio broadcasts, Badilika challenges deep-seated societal norms that perpetuate violence against women and girls, aiming to create widespread cultural shifts.

You are the light. We need you to help heal the country. Share what you know. Don’t be discouraged. Continue to stand up.

Justice work in DRC

Advocacy Efforts

Badilika plays an essential role in mobilizing local, national, and international partners in the fight against SGBV. It advocates for policies and increased resources that strengthen the protection of women and girls and promote justice for survivors.

A Catalyst for Cultural Change

The Badilika Program represents a critical piece of Panzi Foundation’s broader mission to eradicate SGBV by addressing its root causes. Through education, community engagement, and advocacy, the program is working to dismantle the social norms that perpetuate violence and inequality in South Kivu. By focusing on prevention and long-term change, Badilika is creating a safer, more just future for women and girls in the DRC.
